Days 66-70: Big Runs, First Brick and an Abrupt End to the 100 Days

Well, it’s been a difficult week and a half.  I’ve been dealing with some ankle and achilles tendon issues for the past few days and it really flared up during my brick on Sunday (January 6th).  I tried to run through it on the 7th and made it 5 miles.  By the time January 8th came around, I couldn’t go more than .2 miles.  I made the executive decision that I didn’t want to sacrifice my season due to the blow to my ego of not finishing the 100 days.  I had a really strong long run on Saturday the 5th of 11 miles in 1:17.  I just started feeling really strong about my running and then this catastrophe happened.

Moving forward, I’m shifting into a more sustainable triathlon training regimen.  I’m going to focus on my swim for the next couple weeks while working on some functional strength training.  Running will be very touch-and-go for the next month, I believe.  I don’t want to rush back into it and extend my recovery time and put my season in jeopardy.  I will also try to do some light bike workouts as well.  

For swimming, I’m going to work on a 5-day per week program that makes my total volume near 13km.  If I can keep some semblance of fitness while swimming, I should be able to pick up nearly where I left off with my running.  

I’m doing my best not to succumb to the darkness now that I’m injured.  I will come back stronger and with fresh legs.  Stay tuned for swim workouts!

Days 55-56: Holiday Hard Runs

It was a very hectic couple of days on the 24th and 25th of December this year.  Between family time and work I had very little time to run.  I managed to squeak two 5.5 mile runs into my regimen.  Both were of the treadmill variety since it is under my 10 degree Fahrenheit threshold.  Nothing really notable happened on these runs other than the fact that they happened.  I’ve also been feeling a touch under the weather the past few days with a nagging sore throat and lack of energy.  It’s nothing that a little Florida sunshine can’t help though!

Days 49-54: Lots of Volume

It’s been another crazy week of pre-holiday festivities.  In terms of running, it’s been just a really long week.  Lots of 10ks and good pacing.  My weekly total was 49 miles; easily the longest I’ve gone since July in terms of total volume.  I’ve been really diligent this week about running at a pretty reasonable pace.  I ran some good hills on Thursday’s route and I had a great long run on Saturday.  Now if I can just make it through the holiday without gaining 30 lbs I think things will be alright.

I’ve also done a good bit of swimming this week.  I decided to have my favorite workout on Friday: the swim/run brick.  I swam 3k and ran 10k, both at medium efforts.  I am starting to ramp up my swim volume so I can be training in an earnest fashion come the new year.  

On the physical pain side of things; I’ve been wearing some spider tech tape on my left knee due to a long-standing IT band issue that I have, it seems to be doing the trick for now.  I’m really impressed with how durable this stuff is too.  I might have to get more of it.  

Anyway, the volumes and totals are listed below.  It’s going to be another crazy week and then off to Florida on Friday.  Balance to my blogging presence will be restored when I return.
